Fresh Spirit... On the sunny morning, the residence of the French Consulate General in Shanghai begins with this refreshing sun room and tells you how to create a fusion of design and art, history and modernity.

This building is also known as the Villa Basset, located in the heart of the former French Concession, quietly behind the tall iron gate. The apartment was built in 1921 and is named according to its first owner, French broker Lucien Basset. The villa now lives with the French Consul General in Shanghai Axel Cruau and his wife Dourène Cassam-Chenai and their young two children. As early as 2015, Dourène is about to move here to feel both excited and difficult. At the same time, I was a bit difficult, as a consulate, but also the French mansion in Shanghai, has ushered in thousands of international visitors, including the president, the minister, the Minister of the United States, Scientists, artists and business people. "
Dourène wants to make the house more modern elements of life, and hope to fully respect the historical and cultural heritage here. "I have to balance the past and the present, the public and the private side," she said. "I want this house to be the official gateway to the people of France and to the outside world." Dourène is a Parisian, Living in Reunion, Germany, Beijing, Paris, Los Angeles, well versed in the art of cultural fusion. "I and my husband hope that through this official residence, to our Chinese friends and guests to show the best of France: creativity, the art of life and modernity.

ANJA NIEMI PHOTOGRAPHY...The Woman Who Never Existed

The Woman Who Never Existed was inspired by the words of the pioneering Italian actress Eleonora Duse. Eleonora worked the international theatre stage along side Sara Bernhardt in the early 20th century. In contrast to Bernhardt’s outgoing personality, Duse was introverted and private, rarely giving interviews. She once famously told a pushy New York journalist, that ‘away from the stage I do not exist.’
The Woman Who Never Existed tells the story of a fictional character visualized after reading Eleonora’s words,  an actress who only exists in front of an audience, when no one is looking she starts to disappear.

An Artful Display in São Paulo by Felipe Hess ... Photo by Ruy Teixeira.

When Brazilian architect, Felipe Hess, was hired to renovate and reconfigure a grand, 450 square meter apartment on the corner of one of São Paulo's most significant avenue's, Avenida Paulista, he knew exactly what the main focus of the final project was going to be: his young client's vast and impressive art and furniture collection. In order to achieve this, the architect created a striking "blank canvas" which creates a determined and dramatic backdrop for its contents.
Completed in 2013, the original plan of the apartment has been completely reconstructed. Gone are the "compartmentalized rooms," including most of the dividing walls between the public rooms intended for entertaining such as the living room, kitchen and dining room. The same goes for the four bedrooms since the apartment now boasts only two, including the master bedroom of which is a vast, 100 square meter space
